The Lies We tell Ourselves

 There are times when I awaken in the middle of the night from a deep sleep, for whatever reason.

 
As I lay in bed trying to get back to sleep, the house is extremely quiet.
 
My kids are all in their beds, sleeping.
 
I change positions, hoping that I too will drift back into a restful slumber.
 
I hear the rhythmic sound of my lovely wife's breathing. She is peacefully sleeping.
 
I find comfort in the steadiness of her presence. There is so much history and depth and truth, in hearing her breathing beside me in bed.
 
It's one of the sounds I love most dearly.
 
I lay there peacefully soaking it in.
 
Then I realize there is another sound.
 
Drip. Drip. Drip.
 
One of the shower heads in our en suite bathroom is dripping.
 
It's a steady dripping.
 
Drip.
 
It's a rhythmic sound.
 
Drip. Drip.
 
Unlike the comfort I find in the cadence of my wife's steady breathing, the sound I hear from the bathroom is not comforting.
 
It is irritating.
 
DRIP!
 
It is disconcerting to hear the constant dripping in the background.
 
No one else in the house can hear it. They're all sleeping soundly.
 
Drip.
 
I alone can hear the dripping ringing in my ears.
 
DRIP.
 
It's a quiet sound, but to me it is overwhelmingly loud.
 
DRIP!
 
I can no longer relish in the soothingly symphonic rhythms of my wife's sleeping.
 
All I can hear is the Drip, Drip, Dripping robbing me of my sleep.
 
The lies we tell ourselves are like a constant dripping.
 
No one else can hear them.
 
drip.
 
They are small, seemingly insignificant.
 
DRIP.
 
They ring more loudly in your head than anyone else could imagine.
 
DRIP!!
 
False narratives devalue ourselves in our own minds.
 
DRIP, DRIP.
 
The lies we tell ourselves are destructive in their essence. They stymie our growth.
 
They stop us in our tracks.
 
They destroy our belief and hamper our faith.
 
Hear the lies.
 
See them for what they are.
 
Learn to know your true value.
 
Believing the lies destroys you and leads to failure.
 
Redirecting those narratives will help you difuse their reverberations.
 
Overpower the lies and engender positive growth by feeding yourself with truth.
 
Success, however you define it can be yours, by identifying the lies and retelling your inner story.
